That feeling that something is unresolved

An argument from years ago that still triggers emotions. A person you never said goodbye to. Words left unspoken. In Gestalt therapy, these are called unfinished business, one of the most common sources of psychological suffering.

The Zeigarnik effect

In 1927, psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik discovered that people remember incomplete tasks better than completed ones. Emotionally, our unfinished relational experiences consume energy even when we try to ignore them.

How unfinished business affects daily life

  • Rumination: constantly returning to past situations
  • Avoidance of triggering places, people, or topics
  • Transferring emotions: overreacting to present situations because of the past
  • Somatic symptoms from unexpressed emotions

How Gestalt therapy helps

The therapist helps the patient re-experience the unfinished situation in the safety of the session, using the empty chair technique, body work, and gestalt experiments.

Closure doesn't mean forgetting. It means the past stops living your life for you.
