About the psychodynamic approach

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the premise that our current emotional difficulties are rooted in unconscious psychological processes: repressed memories, unresolved inner conflicts and relationship patterns shaped in childhood. The therapist helps discover and understand them within a safe, confidential therapeutic relationship.

At our office, psychodynamic therapists work with patients toward deeper self-understanding. Unlike short-term methods, psychodynamic therapy doesn't just alleviate symptoms but leads to lasting change in how you experience emotions, build relationships and understand your identity. It is effective in treating various mental health conditions, such as depressive and anxiety states and borderline personality.

Understand yourself deeper

Much of what shapes our behaviors and emotions lies beyond the reach of conscious awareness. Psychodynamic therapy helps you reach those hidden layers, understand why you repeat the same patterns and how to free yourself from their influence. It helps you identify unconscious defense mechanisms and the sources of inner conflicts that affect your psyche. In this approach, the therapist follows you, supporting you in working through difficult experiences, trauma and the therapeutic relationship.

Applications

When is psychodynamic therapy particularly effective?

Recurring patterns

Repeating the same relationship mistakes? Falling into similar destructive patterns? Psychodynamic therapy helps recognize unconscious patterns driving the repetition cycle, and break it by building healthier ways of functioning.

Identity difficulties

Feeling of emptiness, lack of clear identity, difficulty answering "who am I?" Psychodynamic therapy helps discover your authentic self, understand your own needs and values hidden beneath layers of adaptive masks.

Trauma & grief

Unresolved grief, childhood trauma, difficult relational experiences. Psychodynamic therapy allows safely processing painful memories and emotions, integrating them into your life story instead of repressing them.

Therapeutic process

Deep understanding, lasting change

Free association & dialogue

In psychodynamic therapy, you talk about what comes to mind: thoughts, feelings, memories, dreams. The therapist listens carefully and helps discover hidden meanings, connections between past and present, unconscious patterns.

Therapeutic relationship as a tool

In the psychodynamic approach, the relationship with the therapist is a key tool for change. Patterns appearing in the therapeutic relationship (transference) mirror patterns from your other relationships; their analysis leads to deep insight.

Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is grounded in understanding unconscious processes that affect mental health. During work with the patient, the therapist seeks to help them become aware of the sources of suffering linked to the inner censor, the ego and hidden emotional conflicts. Therapy helps better understand the patient's needs, recognize their problems and establish an individual treatment plan.
Psychodynamic therapy is usually a long-term process, lasting from several months to several years, depending on the patient's goals and the depth of their difficulties. Sessions most often take place once or twice a week for 50 minutes. Short-term psychodynamic therapy (STPP) is also available, lasting 16–24 sessions. The duration of therapy can be agreed during a consultation with an experienced psychologist or a psychiatry specialist (appropriate qualifications are extremely important).
CBT focuses on changing specific thoughts and behaviors, whereas the psychodynamic approach explores unconscious patterns, past relationships, dreams and inner conflicts. CBT is more structured and short-term, while the psychodynamic approach is more exploratory and can lead to deeper, lasting personality change.
Psychodynamic therapy shows the greatest effectiveness in treating depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, recurring relationship patterns, difficulties with sense of identity, self-esteem issues, unresolved grief and childhood traumas. It also helps people who feel that “something is blocking them” but cannot put it into words.
Yes, online psychodynamic therapy is just as effective as in-person meetings. Research confirms that the therapeutic relationship - a key element of this approach - develops just as well online. Sessions take place via Google Meet or in our office.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy sessions at our Warsaw office (or online) start from 180 PLN for a 50-minute meeting. Session frequency (once or twice weekly) is agreed individually with the therapist. You will find pricing on each specialist's profile.
