Integrative Therapy and Trauma: Why One Approach Is Not Enough
·8 April 2026·1 min read
Trauma is complex and requires a complex response
Psychological trauma is not uniform. Complex trauma, resulting from prolonged adverse experiences, affects emotional regulation, identity, relationships, and the body simultaneously.
Why one approach is not enough
Each therapeutic modality offers something valuable but none covers all dimensions of trauma:
- Psychodynamic therapy explores how the past shapes the present
- CBT teaches practical coping strategies
- Somatic approaches work with the body's stored trauma
- EMDR processes traumatic memories effectively
The strength of integrative therapy
An integrative therapist flexibly combines methods depending on the patient's needs and phase of therapy, from stabilisation techniques to deeper processing work.
Trauma affects the whole person. Its treatment requires an approach that addresses the whole person.
